…A Democratic White House Needs to Reconfirm Its Support for a Democratic Senate Candidate
Giannoulias campaign feels need to stress Obama support
Chicago Tribune, 3/9/10
It’s usually understood that a Democratic president supports his party’s candidates for office, especially when the nominee in question is running for the U.S. Senate seat the president himself once held. But today Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias’ campaign went out of its way to announce that he does, in fact, have the backing of the White House.
Giannoulias Gets White House Support, Sorta
NBC 5 Chicago, 3/9/10
But the White House isn't going out of its way, it seems, to show off that support. In contrast, Obama is already fundraising for Sen. Reid in Nevada and for Sen. Bennett in Colorado. For Giannoulias' part, he seemed to hedge when asked whether he expected Obama to campaign for him in Illinois.
Bankers at the White House?
FOX News, 3/9/10
Not one...but two former bankers with close ties to President Obama. (This from a President who's been publically quite critical of bankers in recent months.) We posted earlier that Alexi Giannoulias was visiting the Obama White House today as a part of a celebration of Greek heritage. Giannoulias is facing yet another round of questions back in Illinois about the beleaguered family business Broadway Bank. In a series of interviews last week (although not with Fox News)...Giannoulias says Broadway (which lost $75-million last year) would not likely survive.

Alexi G. in IL SEN puts Dems in impossible box. He can't win w/stories like this. And yet, party can't walk away, right?
Alexi Giannoulias, dead man walking?
MSNBC, 3/9/10
As we mentioned earlier today, Illinois Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias will be at the White House for today's Greek Independence Day celebration. Wonder if the political folks at the White House want to discuss this Crain's Chicago Business story with him?
Banking On Corruption In The Windy City
Investor’s Business Daily, 3/9/10
Another bank failure is nothing new these days — except if the bank is run by the family of a U.S. Senate candidate who profited handsomely and lent millions to a convicted felon. But then, that's the Chicago way.
Woes at family bank loom over Ill. Senate race
Associated Press, 3/9/10
With the public still furious over bank bailouts, Democrats desperate to keep President Barack Obama's old Senate seat are scrambling to counter revelations that a bank owned by their candidate's family may be nearing collapse.
High Finance Headaches For Giannoulias Campaign
CQ Politics, 3/9/10
Crain's Chicago Business describes a transaction that sounds like it's bound to end up in an Illinois campaign commercial -- and which has put the Senate campaign of Alexi Giannoulias into damage-control mode.
Giannoulias Could Get Windfall if Bank Fails
CQ Political Wire, 3/9/10
"The possibility of family members pocketing millions in tax refunds as Broadway slides toward insolvency and federal receivership is likely to fuel more controversy for Mr. Giannoulias, who already is under fire for his role in the bank's woes." CQ Politics notes "you can almost see the ads write themselves."
