Illinois GOP launches online petition against Madigan's attack on right to privacy
3/2/2011
Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued an opinion Tuesday stating that all the names of gun owners in Illinois are public information and should be disclosed. This decree goes against the Illinois State Police mandate that these names are private and that releasing them is a serious invasion of privacy. The Illinois State Police are asking a judge to issue a ruling before complying with the Madigan letter.
"The legal opinion by Lisa Madigan is an assault on privacy and another attempt by Illinois Democrats and the Madigan family to take the focus away from recent stories about their family enriching themselves, while they passed a 66% income tax increase that is crippling the rest of Illinois families," Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady said.
"Also, if FOID card holders are to be disclosed, why are tax returns private? Specifically, Speaker Mike Madigan, Lisa Madigan's father, has refused to release his tax returns, even though he is a public official, yet we are going make public the names of honest law abiding citizens, possibly putting them and their homes at risk? This is even crazy for Democrat Madigan standards,” said Brady.
To help organize the fight to keep the FOID card list private, the Illinois Republican Party is offering an online petition at FOIDPrivacy.com (see link below) for any Illinois citizen to sign so it can be used to help convince the Democrat led legislature to pass legislation introduced by Republican State Representative Ron Stephens and Republican State Senator Kirk Dillard that would keep Illinois gun ownership private.
"Illinois Democrats should stand up and shout down this Madigan attempt to take away our right to privacy, but they won't," Brady added, “Therefore, all Illinoisans, gun owners or not, need to sign this petition to convince Democrat legislators that what is best for the Madigan family may not be best for their own."
